huh?

I started my externship on Monday. I know that I am being hard on myself when I say this but I feel really stupid. I have no idea what I am supposed to be doing. They had me sit and listen to the other girls answer the phones on the first day and then yesterday I was allowed to scan some things into the computer but other than that I dont really know what I am supposed to do. If this was a restaurant I'd be all over it! It will take me some time to get my footing but until then I dont want to come across as lazy or have no initiative but seriously I just sit there looking like an idiot. I hate it, I want to already know this job like I know my job. Patience was never one of my strong suits!

  1. I've had first week's on more jobs than I care to mention--it's ALWAYS weird and nerve-wracking. Kinda like first dates.

Hang in there and before you know it you'll be running the place.

  3. I have two words for you: learning curve.

On the other hand, maybe your superiors are doing that evil thing they like to do by hanging back and observing your ambition and watching how you make your externship into something.

On the other hand maybe they don't know what you're supposed to be doing.

On the other hand, you could ask.

On the other hand, it might make you look like you need a lot of overseeing, micro-managing, and hand holding.

On the other hand, it's probably just the learning curve thing.

    XO {Hope I didn't freak you out}

PS: I agree with insomniac ellen and Lora.

  4. For the first month of my very first real job out of college all I ever did was read ABC News on the computer. They didn't let me do much. No worries. It should get better!

  5. Me too, girl!

Patience has never been one of my strong suits either.

It's probably only just because you come from a very ACTIVE job (waitressing) that it feels like your doing nothing.

But right now, it's simply about learning.

You GO, girl! You're going to be faaaaaaabulous!

Because lets face it...you already are faaabulous!

  6. I totally sucked my first week of work but I think you catch on quickly to things so just give yourself some time to adjust. I think Alix had a good point.

  7. This sounds like most jobs I've had, excluding waitressing jobs b/c for some reason i'm just GOOD at food service. Why oh why couldn't I ever be good at something that pays well like say, engineering?

  9. The first few weeks at a new job are the worst! You feel like a moron not doing anything, but then when they do let you do something, you know everyone is analyzing it to see if you do it correctly! Good luck!
